
It was bound to happen sooner or later: Somebody overdoes the caffeine-laced energy drinks and buys the farm. When this happened with ephedra, the FDA stepped in and criminalized ephedra, saying it was "unsafe at any dose" because a few overzealous weight loss consumers who took too much passed out and died. I wonder if the FDA will now ban all caffeinated drinks by applying the same logic
Red Bull, Monster and other caffeine-slamming drinks have been embraced by America's youth over the last few years as a seemingly quick and easy way to heighten the intensity of a party, stay up all night studying for exams or basically just seem cool for daring to sacrifice your long-term health for a short-term buzz. Backed by hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising, highly-caffeinated energy drinks have become a huge commercial success... but at what cost?
